The staggering economic toll of "lost youth"

Americans have calculated the economic damage from young people not working.

They include nearly 7 million people between the ages of 16 and 24 who are not in school and do not have a steady job. "Lost youth" do not contribute to the economy and do not pay taxes. Worse, public money is spent on them for crime suppression, welfare and health care.
Each year, each "lost" young person must bear a $13,900 tax burden and $37,450 in Social Security deductions.
Over his lifetime, on average, he must pay $170,740 in taxes and $529,030 in Social Security. For all 6.7 million people, these figures total $1.6 trillion and $4.8 trillion, respectively.
"Lost youth" have always existed, but not in such numbers, and their numbers are steadily increasing in this economic climate.
