The beginning of the journey

Alexei Mordashov was born in Cherepovets, Vologda Region, on September 26, 1965, in the family of an electrical engineer and an equipment department specialist. After leaving school, he went to Leningrad to receive higher education, where he graduated with honors from the Togliatti Institute of Engineering and Economics in Leningrad. Togliatti. There he met Anatoly Chubais, who was then a teacher at this university and accepted Alexey Mordashov as his assistant to his department. After graduation, Alexei Mordashov returned to his hometown and started working at the Cherepovets Iron and Steel Works as a senior economist. He quickly rose through the ranks to the position of deputy head of the plant's planning department. In 1989 Mordashov was sent to VoestAlpine, an Austrian steel company, for an internship.

Miraculous transformation

Three years later, at the very beginning of the epic of privatization in Russia, Mordashov became director of economics and finance at the Cherepovets plant, transformed into Severstal in 1993. He was then instructed by Yuri Lipukhin, the plant's director, to take over the privatization of the giant. But Mordashev went his own way and set up a subsidiary, Severstal-Invest, for this purpose with only 24% shares owned by Severstal and the remaining 76% by Mordashev himself. When the deed was done, he dynamically bought up shares in the steel mill.

As a result of the privatization redistribution, Mordashov owned 16% shares in the combine and 80% shares under his control, i.e. he became the rightful owner of Severstal. Yuri Lipukhin, naturally, was forced to resign as head of the enterprise, and the hero of our article took his place in 1996.

In 2002, the shareholders' meeting of Severstal decided to create the managing company ZAO Severstal Group, of which Alexey Mordashov became the general director. Now he heads Severstal Group holding, which includes 4 divisions: metallurgical, raw materials, automobile, transport, including the OMK project "Alliance 1420". In 2007 Siemens AG signed an agreement with Alexey Mordashov on long-term strategic cooperation in the development of Power Machines.
