The research was conducted at the Brookings Institution (Washington, DC), Oxford Economics, Moody's Analytics, and the U.S. Census Bureau. The Institute is one of America's oldest think tanks that conducts research primarily in the fields of economics, metropolitan politics, foreign policy, and the global economy.
The metropolitan metropolitan areas of China, Turkey and Saudi Arabia dominated the top ten.
First on the list is Shanghai, China, the size of Finland. From 2010 to 2011, Shanghai achieved revenue growth of 9.8% and employment growth of 5.8 %. Other Chinese megacities: Hangzhou, Shenzhen and Shenyang also made the top 10.
Saudi Arabia, with its metropolitan areas of Riyadh and Jeddah, came in second and third place.
The report notes that 90 % of the fastest growing metropolitan economies are outside North America and Western Europe. In contrast, 95 % of the slowest-growing metropolitan economies are located in the United States, Western Europe and earthquake-ravaged Japan.
In Shanghai, per capita income grew by almost 10 percent in 2011. In Ankara, employment grew by almost 6 percent. In Santiago, Chile, income and employment grew by 5%.
