China forged a small town
A copy of Halstatt, a centuries-old village in Austria, has been opened in China's Guangdong province, amid legal disputes. The natives of the original town were not initially made aware that their historic buildings and streets would be copied. They only learned of this last year, during a visit to Hong Kong by the mayor of that city as part of an Austrian delegation.
The Austrian city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and its "Made in China" replica is valued at $940 million. The project was conceived by Chinese mining magnates with the support of Minmetals Land Inc.
Some residents of the original Halstatt, with a population of about 900, will travel to Guangdong to attend the opening ceremony.
