The EU will check Gazprom

On Tuesday, the European Union Commission began inspecting Gazprom for violations of antitrust rules concerning competition in Central and Eastern European gas markets.

The European Commission said in its statement that Gazprom allegedly violated anti-competitive rules in three cases. The gas giant is suspected of dividing gas markets, thereby restricting gas supplies through EU member states; impeding energy diversification; and unfair gas prices and linking them to oil prices. "Such behavior, if proven, limits competition, drives up prices and impairs the security of supply. Ultimately, it harms consumers in the EU," the commission states.
As reported in the press, the offices of EU gas companies are already being inspected.
