Hotkeys are present in almost all modern computer programs, allowing the user to greatly accelerate their work. The MetaTrader 4 trading terminal is no exception, as it has more built-in hotkeys than you can imagine.

Moving by hotkeys on the price chart

Let's start with the most common keys - these are the arrow keys "Up", "Down", "Right", "Left". With their help you can easily move through the price chart:

  • The "Up" key or the "Left" key moves the graph to the left;
  • the "Down" key or the "Right" key moves the graph to the right.

The use of these keys will replace the usual scrolling of the mouse wheel, with which most traders move on the chart.

You can use the other keys to move more quickly:

  • "Page Up", "Page Down" "flip" the price chart for entire pages;
  • The "Home" key takes us to the very beginning of the price chart;
  • The "End" key moves to the end of the graph.

Sometimes it is necessary to see how this or that currency pair reacted to some fundamental event. This is where the "Enter" key can help.

  • "Enter" move to the date set by the trader.

After pressing "Enter", a separate window appears in which you must enter the desired date. After pressing the "Enter" key again, the graph will move to the desired quotes.

Changing the chart scale

Instead of changing the chart scale with the buttons located in the terminal on the toolbar, you can use the keys:

  • "+" - increase the scale of the graph;
  • "-" - respectively, reducing the scale of the graph.

Deleting graphical objects

Every trader, when analyzing the chart, draws some support and resistance levels, technical lines, figures, etc. To remove unnecessary objects, most traders use right-click menu. However, you can remove unwanted objects from the chart much easier with just two buttons:

  • "Del" removes from the price chart all objects selected by the trader;
  • "Backspace" deletes the last constructed object from the price chart.

Changing the chart type

As you know, the MetaTrader 4 terminal by default allows you to use three basic chart types: bars, candlesticks and line chart. Each type of chart has its own hotkey:

  • "Alt" + "1" - bars;
  • "Alt" + "2" - Japanese candles;
  • "Alt" + "3" - linear graph.

Closing an unwanted window

Along with the cross, which is traditionally located in the right corner of the window of all Windows programs, in MetaTrader 4 you can use the "Esc" key to close.

  • "Esc" closes the open window.

Opening the necessary tabs of the terminal

The buttons on the toolbar that open additional tabs can be successfully replaced by a keyboard shortcut:

  • "Ctrl" + "U" - call the symbol window;
  • "Ctrl" + "M" - call the "Market Watch" tab;
  • "Ctrl" + "D" - call the "Data window" tab;
  • "Ctrl" + "N" - call the "Navigator" tab;
  • "Ctrl" + "T" - call the "Terminal" tab;
  • "Ctrl" + "R" - call the strategy tester.

Switching between profiles in MT4

Many traders group charts into profiles. To move between them a different key combination is used:

  • "Shift" + "F5" - move between profiles.

Function keys

The authors of MetaTrader 4 did not disregard the function keys, each of which performs a specific task:

  • "F1" calls up the "User's Manual";
  • "F2" call the archive of quotes;
  • "F3" - the window for adding global variables;
  • "F4" - calls the MetaEditor;
  • "F6" - testing of the attached to the chart trading advisor in strategy tester;
  • "F7" - call the properties of the attached Advisor to the chart;
  • "F8" - call the graph properties window;
  • "F9" - call the order opening window;
  • "F10" - call the quotation window;
  • "F11" unfolds the price chart window into full screen mode;
  • "F12" moves the price chart one candle forward. The combination "Shift" + "F12" is used to move back one candle.
