China Imports Ghost Towns

China already has its own two cities with almost no inhabitants, and now the same city has appeared in Angola.

The city is called New Luanda. Chinese builders commissioned 750 eight-story apartment buildings, ten schools, and more than 100 buildings for various types of household services. The city, which has almost no inhabitants, was built by the state-owned China International Trust and Investment Corporation (CITIC).
The project cost $3.5 billion and covers an area of 50 square kilometers. The city is designed for half a million people and this is just the beginning - "there are already several satellite towns being built in Angola by Chinese firms," writes the local press. Angola's President José Eduardo dos Santos considers the project a social one. But apartments in the complex, according to ads, cost from 120,000 to 200,000 U.S. dollars. According to other sources, the price of 3-bedroom apartments goes up to 250,000 dollars. The average Angolan would never dream of such money; according to the World Bank, per capita GDP in Angola is $5,144 a year.
Angola is China's largest oil supplier in Africa. Some energy experts speculate that the construction of the cities by the Chinese is related to the development of oil money expected to flow into the country after the discovery of new fields.
