The first comics sold for $3.5 million.
Batman first appeared in «Detective Comics« in May 1939.
At an auction in New York City, a collection of early comic books, Jaws Clenched, sold for $3.5 million. The collection, consisting of 345 comics, was purchased by Billy Wright of Virginia, at a young age. Detective Comics Magazine No. 27,featuring Batman's debut, which sold for 10 cents in 1939, sold at auction for $523,000. The collection was discovered last year when a relative of Wright's was cleaning out the basement of his house.
Another magazine, Action Comics No. 1 of 1938, featuring Superman for the first time, sold for $299,000.
No one saw this wonderful collection for a long time - because Mr. Wright never mentioned it in his lifetime. The neatly stacked magazines are all in good condition, lying untouched for 17 years.
According to experts, the collection becomes more valuable and meaningful because the books were kept by the man who bought them as a boy.
