Will the polar bear be gone in 20 years?
It looks like the polar bear population on our planet is coming to an end.
According to many scientists, in 20 years polar bears will be extinct in the polar regions, and in 30 years there will be none left in zoos.
Over the past thirty years, the number of polar bears in the Chukchi Sea has dropped from 4,000 to about 1,700 animals. According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the species is now on the brink of extinction. In 2008, there were 20,000 to 25,000 polar bears in the world. Due to the rapid decline in numbers, the polar bear has been listed in the Red Book.
There are several reasons for their disappearance. The polar bear in the Arctic Ocean hunts on the edge of sea ice. In these areas, seals go out on the ice, where they become easy prey for the bear. If the ice becomes thinner and breaks, and moves far from the shore, bears and cubs simply get lost on the huge ice floes, unable to return to shore, to their natural habitat. The best places to hunt disappear.
In search of food, they come to populated areas where they are shot by locals.
Polar bears live in the Arctic, on the shores of Alaska, Canada, Greenland, Spitsbergen, and Russia. There are no bears in the North Pole areas due to the thick ice and lack of open water.
Since last June, the North Pole has been losing 100,000 square kilometers of ice в daywhich is comparable to the size of Iceland.
