A lethal dose of Coca-Cola

The main cause of death of a 30-year-old woman was the large amount of Coca-Cola she drank, police in the New Zealand city of Invercargill concluded .

Natasha Harris drank 10 liters of carbonated beverage every day until her heart stopped three years ago. The woman had twice the recommended safe dose of caffeine and more than 11 times the recommended safe dose of sugar. Researchers calculated that 10 liters of Coca-Cola contained more than 1 kg of sugar and 970 grams of caffeine.

The Coca-Cola Company tried to convince the investigation that its products had nothing to do with Ms. Harris's death. The mother of eight children, they believe, had been suffering from a number of health problems over the past year.

In turn, the extended family claims that the mother developed an addiction to Coca-Cola and went into "withdrawal" if her favorite beverage was not available. She drank Coca-Cola all her life and even lost all her teeth as a result. Even the fact that her children's baby teeth had lost their enamel did not stop her.

Police officials said that Coca-Cola could not be held responsible for the health of consumers who drank excessive amounts of the product. At the same time, they called on manufacturers of sweet drinks to visibly inform consumers about the high concentration of sugar and caffeine in their products.
Ms. Harris and her family should have "heeded" the symptoms of her illness, the investigator added.
