The Suffering of American Farmers

Farmers in California are having trouble finding farm workers, despite the region's high unemployment rate.

On peach farms, in the Marysville region, a real disaster: Mountains of rotting fruit lie beneath the trees. There are not enough workers to harvest - although the region's unemployment rate is between 16 and 18 percent, twice the national average. Farmers complain: "People are sitting at home, loafing. They could get a job and easily make $20 an hour." According to observation, many Americans are not crazy about low-wage labor. That, in countries with high unemployment rates, jobs for such labor go unfilled is nothing new.
Harsh immigration laws in some states have contributed to the loss of crops, with illegals fleeing, leaving fields unharvested. Seasonal harvest work is usually performed by illegal immigrants, not citizens.
Last year, an illegal alabama tomato picker was paid about $6 an hour, well below the federal minimum wage.
As for peach plantations, many citizens are willing to work, but not for that kind of money.
